our story
Summit Christian Academy was born out of prayer.
In the mid-1980s, several families at Peninsula Community Chapel began asking a simple but profound question: What would it look like to educate our children in a way that truly honored God? They longed for more than academic competence. They desired an education that would teach their children to think from a distinctly Christian worldview – to love what is true, good, and beautiful.
In the early 1990s, that desire took clearer shape. After researching Christian schools across the country, members of the PCC community were introduced to the classical Christian model, inspired by schools such as Logos School in Moscow, Idaho, and The Geneva School in Orlando, Florida. They prayed. And ultimately, they stepped forward in faith and chose a classical Christian school.

The Founding Years
A steering committee was formed in the mid-1990’s to create the school’s foundational documents, mission, and structure. In the fall of 1996, Summit Christian Academy opened its doors at Immanuel Baptist Church in Newport News. Four multi-grade classrooms were created to group approximately 35 students into grades K4/K5, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, and 5th/6th grades.
ESTABLISHING ROOTS
Summit grew steadily in its first decade, and additional grades were added each year. In 2000, Peninsula Community Chapel completed its facility in Yorktown, which became home to the Upper School. By the spring of 2003, Summit proudly celebrated its first graduate.
By its 10th anniversary, Summit was an established school in the region. Enrollment expanded, co-curricular programs, like athletics and theater, were created, and additional classroom space was added to meet demand.
A Vision for Growth
Over the next decade, Summit matured in academic depth and community life. As the school approached its 20th anniversary, enrollment demand increased for the early grammar grades. After prayer and planning, God gave Summit’s School Board a vision for growth that accommodates two classes per grade level. In the fall of 2019, the school year began with two 1st grade classes.
Building a Legacy
As the Grammar classes doubled in size, Summit’s Grammar School outgrew its original home at Immanuel Baptist Church. In 2023, the school launched its first capital campaign to strengthen facilities and prepare for long-term sustainability.
In 2023, Summit formalized a partnership with Grafton Baptist Church to relocate the Grammar School. In August of 2024, the Grammar School opened at its new location at Grafton Baptist Church off Route 17 in Yorktown, bringing the board’s vision for two classes per grade level to life.
Summit launched its second capital campaign in 2025. This initiative sought to retire aging modular buildings and expand the Upper School campus to accommodate the larger Grammar School classes soon matriculating to the Upper School.
While accredited with Cognia for nearly two decades, Summit’s leadership desired to root more firmly in the classical Christian tradition. In the fall of 2025, the school was awarded full accreditation status by the Association of Classical Christian Schools.
Ready to Soar
By 2026, construction was complete. New classrooms, offices, an art room, a science lab, and changing rooms enhanced the Upper School.
As we look to the future, Summit is poised for growth. With updated and expanded facilities, a deepened commitment to classical Christian education, and broader co-curricular offerings, Summit Christian Academy is more equipped now than ever to prepare students academically, socially, and spiritually, equipping them to discern truth, articulate their faith, and serve others for the glory of Jesus Christ.
